    The length of the oxo-biodegradation process depends on a number of factors such as ambient temperature and the thickness of the plastic product. In general, ReverteTM plastic films and bags will oxo-biodegrade in an average of 2.5 years after being discarded in the waste stream. In contrast, conventional plastics without ReverteTM can last up to 400 years in the environment.

  • ASTM D6954-04 Tier 1

       

    Polyolefin products made with ReverteTM additives will abiotically degrade in the presence of oxygen. Oxidative degradation has been proven in accordance with the requirements of Tier 1 of ASTM D6954-04 in Smithers RAPRA Report CTR 51251 dated 4 Mar. 2010.

    ASTM D6954-04 Tier 2

       

    The ability of ReverteTM products to comply with the Tier 2 biodegradation of ASTM 6954-04 has been demonstrated by the loss of molecular mass achieved after abiotic thermal degradation, resulting in ultimate biodegradation of the material into CO2, water, mineral salts and biomass (Biosystems Atlanta Report No. 795-11028 dated 14 Sep. 2010 and Report No. 795-11046-1 dated 20 Jan. 2011).

    ASTM D6954-04 Tier 3

       

    The eco-toxicity Tier 3 section of ASTM D6954-04 and OECD 207 & 208 testing standards mandate that no harmful residues remain following the oxidization and biodegradation phases, and this has been verified for ReverteTM additives per Biosystems Atlanta Report No. 795-11046-1-T3 dated 9 Feb. 2011 and Report No. 795-11058-1-T3 dated 9 Feb. 2011.

     

    Food contact safety

       

    ReverteTM additives are safe for direct food-contact according to the European Union Directive 2002/72/EC and the U.S. FDA Code of Federal Regulations, Chapter 21 parts 175-178 (Smithers RAPRA report GC0089 dated 27 May 2008). However, it is the responsibility of the manufacturers of products intended for food-contact to ensure that all other materials incorporated by them comply with those requirements.
